Professor Peter Clayton's primary research interest is centred on understanding mechanisms leading to disordered growth, using clinical, genomic, in-vitro and in-vivo approaches. He has led a research team of clinicians and scientists, whose work has spanned basic science through to clinical trials, with a focus on translation to patient care.

His clinical interests include late endocrine effects of childhood cancer treatment and the transition of young people with chronic endocrine conditions through to adult care. He now advises on clinical trials for an oral growth hormone secretagogue in growth disorders

He served as General Secretary of the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology between 2015 and 2019. He is currently Senior Medical Adviser and Consultant (part time) with Lumos Pharma, Austin Texas, who are undertaking trials on the use of an oral growth hormone (GH) secretagogue in paediatric GH deficiency.
