Professor Gary Butler is an Emeritus Consultant in Paediatric & Adolescent Medicine and Endocrinology at University College Hospital in London and holds an Honorary Personal Chair in Child and Adolescent Health at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. He qualified at St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School in London, and after junior positions in paediatrics, he trained in paediatric endocrinology in Edinburgh. After working in Wales, Leeds and Reading he returned to London and established an adolescent endocrine service at UCLH focused on disorders of puberty with specialist clinics for growth disorders, gonadotropin deficiency, and Klinefelter syndrome.
He designed the school age and specialist RCPCH growth charts. Through the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology he has been developing standards of care for transgender children and adolescents. His research programmes include growth hormone quality of life and safety, Klinefelter syndrome, male hypogonadism and fertility, and the immune system during transgender puberty. In 2020 Professor Butler was given the Outstanding Clinician Award by the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology recognising his significant clinical, research and educational contributions to the practice of paediatric endocrinology.
